Instructions

Make the Sloppy Joe Mixture
  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef. Break it up with a spoon and cook until mostly browned.
  2. Add diced onion and cook for a few minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in minced garlic for the last 30 seconds to avoid burning.
  4. Drain excess grease if necessary, then stir in ketchup, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and brown sugar (if using).
  5. Let it simmer for about 8 to 10 minutes until thickened but still saucy.
Make the Garlic Toast
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Mix softened butter with garlic and a pinch of salt. Spread generously on the slices of bread.
  3. Place the bread on a baking sheet and toast for about 6 to 8 minutes, keeping an eye on it.
  4. If desired, flip the bread for extra crispiness for a minute or two.
Assemble and Melt the Cheese
  1. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted bread, letting it sit without pressing down.
  2. Top with shredded cheese and return to the oven for 3 to 5 minutes until melted.
  3. For browned cheese, broil for 30 to 60 seconds, but do not walk away.

Notes

For serving, set up a build-your-own style with toast, warm meat, and cheese in bowls. Toast the bread longer if serving at a party to prevent sogginess. Consider adding toppings like chopped pickles for a crunchy contrast.
