Instructions
Preparation
- In a bowl, gently mix the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper until just combined. Shape mixture into 4 to 6 oval patties.
- Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium to medium high heat. Add patties and brown well, about 3 to 4 minutes per side.
Cooking the Gravy
- Move browned patties to a plate. In the same pan, add sliced mushrooms. If pan looks dry, add a bit more butter.
- Let mushrooms brown for about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Sprinkle flour over mushrooms, stir for one minute, then slowly pour in beef broth, scraping up browned bits from the bottom.
- Bring gravy to a gentle simmer until thickened, about 3 to 6 minutes. Optionally, add a splash of milk or cream for richness.
- Return patties to the pan, nestling them in the gravy. Simmer on low for 8 to 12 minutes until patties are cooked through.
Serving
- Let the dish rest off the heat for a couple of minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld.
Notes
For gluten-free versions, substitute breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour with a gluten-free flour blend. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or bread.
